Are You Performing These Vital Mid-Season Checks on Your Snow Removal Fleet that Could Save You Thousands?

February 2017
Winter weather takes a huge toll on our vehicles as it is, so making time for mid-season checks is extremely important in preventing costly breakdowns on your snow removal fleet. We have highlighted some steps you can take to make sure to keep your vehicles are running at their peak performance.

Carry a Snowplow Emergency Parts Kit- This includes extra hydraulic fluid, hydraulic hoses, pump solenoid, extra cutting edge bolts and a trip spring.

Evaluate Snow Cutting Edge – Monitor for wear and tear. If the cutting edge is less than 4 inches tall, replace it. An over worn cutting edge can result in costly repairs to the blade later.

Regularly Check Fluids and Equipment- Place special emphasis on your drivers/operators to check fluid levels and filters throughout the season. Fuel tanks should be kept topped off when the temperature is fluctuating widely to reduce condensation of water vapor. Anti-gelling fuel additives are advisable. Check engine belts for cracks, hoses for leaks and vehicle fueling levels - engine oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, battery, and radiator coolant and windshield washer fluid. Make sure windshield wipers and defrosters are in tiptop shape. Remember, SAFETY FIRST!

Store Snow Removal Equipment in a Dry Location – Cover with a tarp and find a dry location. NEVER store equipment where moisture is prevalent. This will prevent rust and corrosion and will ensure your vehicles are running at their peak. This tip is an obvious one, however, that doesn’t mean it should be taken lightly.

Constantly Clean, Grease and Spray Equipment - This includes, salt spreaders, plows, snow blowers, and vehicle lights. Make sure your drivers or maintenance crews wax the headlamps to get rid of dirt and salt buildup (any type of car wax will do) as this will prevent ice from building up when slush sprays your vehicle. KEEP LIGHTS CLEAR! Cleaning these parts continuously will prevent corrosion and rust.

Examine Electrical Connections – Check the battery terminals regularly to ensure they are free of corrosion. To prevent corrosion, add dielectric grease at least once a month to all connections.

Monitor Tire Pressure Regularly - Under inflated tires can cause your vehicles to react slowly to steering which increases the potential for an accident. Be sure to add enough air to keep ALL tires at the recommended levels of inflation BEFORE each trip.
