10 Keys to Safe City Driving

August 2017

City streets and their traffic waves can be chaotic and unpredictable, especially when driving a bus, plow or fleet vehicle. Leave yourself (and your drivers) plenty of time, stay calm and don’t get distracted!

These may seem like simple “no duh” tips – but they are key for safe city driving…

  1. Be aware of high traffic times and avoid them – Listen to radio traffic & weather reports so you can be prepared for anything that will directly affect your driving conditions.
  2. Merge slowly and smoothly into traffic system – It is important to understand your traffic waves and make sure to slowly break into intersections.
  3. Be assertive without being aggressive - It is important to know who is in front of you, along side of you and behind you AT ALL TIMES – cars, trucks, pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles.
  4. ALWAYS maintain a safe driving distance - Following distance is what will keep you safe when something unexpected happens ahead.
  5. Be aware of your NO ZONE and pay close attention – Verify all NO ZONES prior to city driving, including low bridges.
  6. Pick a lane and stick to it – Traffic accidents are heightened every time you change lanes. Only change lanes when you must, but do so with extreme caution and be aware of your blind spots.
  7. Take breaks and check your vehicle – Big cities are more prone to pot holes, and road defects. Make sure your vehicle is up to the challenge and be aware of any issues that could arise.
  8. ALWAYS expect the unexpected – As always, you should be prepared for just about any situation. Tire trouble, an accident, weather conditions or an erratic driver, could force you to make important decisions behind the wheel. Always have a plan B.
  9. As always – a vehicle inspection is required by law before hitting the road. DO NOT FORGET to do your inspection, as you may miss something that could be potentially dangerous.
